Do You Really Need More Space? Why Organization Isn’t About Having a Bigger Home
One of the most common things we hear from clients is, “If only I had more space.” A bigger primary closet. A larger pantry. More basement storage. Another cabinet or two in the kitchen.
It’s easy to assume that more square footage would solve the problem. But after organizing hundreds of spaces, we’ve found that the problem often isn’t a lack of space. It’s that the space you have isn’t being used in a way that supports your life today.
Most of us naturally fill the space available to us. A bigger closet can quickly become a fuller closet. A larger basement can simply provide more room to accumulate things.
That’s why professional home organization isn’t just about finding more places to put things. It starts with understanding what you own, what you actually use and how your home needs to function for your family.
Your Home Needs to Change as Your Life Changes
When we first meet with a client, we don’t immediately start pulling everything out of closets or telling them what needs to go. We start by listening.
We walk through the spaces they want to address and talk about what’s working, what isn’t and what their everyday life actually looks like…because those needs are constantly changing.
Kids get older and outgrow clothes, toys and gear. Parents age, and we may inherit meaningful belongings that need a home. Families grow. Kids leave for college. We become empty nesters. Hobbies and routines change.
Yet our homes don’t automatically adapt along with us.
Often, the first step toward a more organized home is simply reevaluating whether the things in each space still belong there.
You Don’t Have to Get Rid of Everything
One of the biggest concerns we hear from new clients is that hiring a professional organizer means someone is going to come into their home and tell them to throw everything away.
That’s not how we work. Instead, we help you evaluate what you use, how often you use it and where it makes the most sense to store it. Sometimes the item absolutely deserves to stay. It just doesn’t need to take up valuable everyday space.
For example:
Keepsakes don’t necessarily need to occupy prime closet space. They may be better protected and organized in dedicated, labeled bins in a basement storage area.
Clothes your children have outgrown can have a designated system so they’re easy to donate, sell or save for a younger sibling.
Once-a-year entertaining pieces don’t need to take up valuable kitchen cabinets. Holiday-specific dishes, serving pieces and décor can be organized together in a storage area until they’re needed.
These may seem like small changes, but collectively they free up the spaces you use every day for the things you actually need every day.
Sometimes the Space Really Does Need to Work Harder
Decluttering and reorganizing what you own is one part of the process. We also look for opportunities to maximize every available inch of your home.
That might mean choosing organizing products specifically for an unusually shaped pantry rather than trying to force a standard solution into it.
Or it might mean recognizing that a child’s closet technically has enough square footage, but the existing layout leaves much of that space unusable. In that case, we can design and install a new closet system that makes better use of the space that’s already there.
This is why there is no one-size-fits-all approach to professional organizing. The goal isn’t to make every pantry, closet or basement look the same. The goal is to create a home that works better for the people living in it.
Organization Should Fit Your Life
Every client is different. Every family is different. And every organizing project should be different, too.
At Serenity At Home, we create an individualized plan based on your home, your belongings, your routines and your priorities. Sometimes that means letting go of things you no longer need. Sometimes it means relocating items to a more appropriate space. And sometimes it means redesigning a space so you can finally use all of it.
You may discover that you don’t need a bigger house, a larger closet or more storage after all. You simply need the space you already have to work better for the life you’re living now.
And with fall approaching, this is an especially good time to take a fresh look at your home. The holidays will be here before we know it, bringing guests, entertaining, gifts and plenty of additional activity. Getting organized now means you can head into the busiest months of the year with a home that feels functional, manageable and ready for what’s ahead.
If there are spaces in your home that no longer work for your family, Serenity At Home can help you rethink them. Schedule a complimentary consultation and let’s create a home that works for the way you live today.
